A bunch of netizens raised eyebrows when birthday boy Ishan Kishan was selected ahead of Sanju Samson for the first ODI against Lanka. If Times of India is to trust, the reason behind Sanju’s snub is a knee ligament tear which he reportedly endured during a training session in Colombo.
Sanju Samson in doubt for the rest of the ongoing series vs Sri Lanka:
The hard-hitting Kerela batter has always had issues with consistency. This year’s IPL saw him score a 100 as Rajasthan’s skipper but he barely did anything noteworthy in other matches. The man oozes talent and class and is a gun fielder too. These reasons contributed in him getting the nod for the Lanka series but destiny suggests it’s not his time yet.
The right-handed wicket-keeper was earlier ruled out of today’s contest and is being closely monitored by Indian Cricket’s Medical Team.
“Sanju Samson sprained a ligament in his knee and hence he wasn’t available for selection for the series opener. The medical team is tracking his progress at the moment.” BCCI’s media team confirmed.
As it stands:
Srilanka scored a competitive total of 262 runs. Opener Avishka Fernando(32 off 35) and wicketkeeper Mind(27 off 44) got them off a sturdy start and added 49 runs for the opening stand. Rajapaksa and DaSilva also got starts but none could convert their start into a fifty-plus score. Skipper Shanaka’s 39 and Karunaratne’s late surge got them to a respectable total of 262 even after being 205 for 7 at one stage. Deepak Chahar picked two wickets while Kul-Cha magic accounted for 4 strikes.
Dhawan-led India has decided to go ballistic and has scored at a brisk pace so far. Prithvi Shaw’s flamboyance resulted in 43 runs off just 24 balls before he was deceived by Dhananjaya’s spin. Debutant Kishan has also come all-guns-blazing and is currently at 23* off 12 while captain Dhawan is playing the anchor and taking his time. India looks well set to chase the modest target with ease as the scorecard reads 89/1 at the nine-over mark.
