The three-match ODI series between South Africa and England officially kicked off yesterday (January 27) in the city of Bloemfontein. The One-Day International series opener between International heavyweights occurred at the Mangaung Oval Cricket Ground. Hosts South Africa managed to come out victorious in the enthralling fixture, kicking off their full-fledged home season in a fitting fashion.
It was a remarkable performance from South Africa, especially after England’s great start while chasing a massive total of 299. England were 149 for the loss of no wickets after the first 20 overs but The Proteas made a fine comeback with the ball in the latter part of the game. Anrich Nortje starred for the home team with as many as 4 wickets, while Rassie Van Der Dussen was their pick of the batters following a mammoth 111-run knock in the first innings.
“Player of the Match did his job, took two quick wickets and we really bounced back well after that. I was expecting at least one of the bowlers to do damage. We’re trying to shift our mindset from the result and more about how we want to play our game. We need the win, we need the points, but it’s also about how to go about our business.” said South Africa captain Temba Bavuma in the post-match presentation

Umpire Marais Erasmus forgets to watch an entire delivery!
Meanwhile, a video of umpire Marais Erasmus’ hilarious act during the series opener is doing rounds on social media. The comical incident occurred during the 24th over, while South Africa quick Anrich Nortje was bowing to centurion Jason Roy. Erasmus, who was standing as a leg-umpire, was not aware that Nortje was bowling and had his back turned towards the batter. The local umpire missed an entire delivery and tuned back in after hearing the sound of the shot.
Fortunately, no significant episode occurred during the delivery and the game resumed without many conversations. The incident, however, was the talk of the town on social media during the game as the netizens bombarded the social media platforms with numerous memes.
