Latest Cricket News: The five-member BCCI selection committee gathered in Mumbai on Tuesday to pick and disclose India’s squad for the upcoming home World Cup. Amid a packed press conference, chief selector Ajit Agarkar and skipper Rohit Sharma announced a 15-member lineup, which will represent India in the marquee ICC competition. As one would expect, India have opted to head into the World Cup 2023 with a widely experienced unit.
The exclusion, rather non-selection, of some renowned players remained a highly talked point on social media after India’s squad announcement. Contrary to fans’ expectations, Indian selectors ignored the likes of Yuzvendra Chahal, Ravi Ashwin, and Washington Sundar. All three elite spin bowlers were fancying their chances of making it into India’s 15-member lineup for the mega event.
Latest Cricket News: ‘There are two players missing in this team’ says Harbhajan Singh
Meanwhile, legendary spinner Harbhajan Singh has lashed out at Indian selectors after not finding the names of Yuzvendra Chahal and Arshdeep Singh in India’s World Cup squad. The former Punjab cricketer believes in having a left-arm pacer in the lineup in order to add variety to the team’s bowling attack. Harbhajan was backing now-excluded Arshdeep Singh to play the exact role in the national side.
“There are two people missing in this team. First, Yuzvendra Chahal, and second, Arshdeep Singh. A left-arm seamer (Arshdeep) can bring the new ball in, it’s very useful. He can get wickets early in the game. I’m not saying that right-handers can’t do that, but a left-hand seamer can create a good angle to get the wickets.” said Harbhajan Singh
Moreover, Harbhajan Singh went on to highlight Yuzvendra Chahal’s match-winning abilities with the ball in hand. The 43-year-old labeled Chahal as a ‘pure match winner’ in white-ball cricket and called his non-selection notably unfair.
“Yuzvendra Chahal, a proven match-winner, who has taken more wickets than any other spinner. If he was playing for any other country, I would think he would always be in the playing XI. If I was part of the management, I would definitely play him in the team,” Harbhajan further added
