Just when you think that things can’t get any worse for the Lankan cricket team, another awful piece of news strikes. And with every day that passes by, the prospect of Lankan Cricket’s recovery becomes an exceedingly unrealistic dream. The limited-overs series against India is just around the corner and is set to commence on July 18 but Sri Lanka doesn’t seem to be ready.
Kusal Perera ruled out of India series:
Dashing southpaw Kushal Perera, who also happens to be Lanka’s wicket-keeper won’t feature against India. According to cricbuzz, Kusal has suffered an injury to his right shoulder which makes it difficult to bat. 30-year-old Kusal has 8 international centuries to his name and has scored 3071 ODI runs at a healthy strike rate of 92.31.
Just a couple of months ago, Kusal was appointed as the new skipper of Lankan cricket after Thisara Perera chose to play twenty-20 leagues and retired from international cricket. This was an aftermath of his match-turning knock of 153 against the South African team in late 2019. New ball magician Binuda Fernando has also suffered a sprain to his left ankle and is set to miss the ODIs against India. The loss will be noticeable as Binuda has been brilliant in his short international carrier so far.
Captaincy change and pay disputes:
Allrounder Dasun Shanaka was recently appointed as the new skipper which resulted in Kusal Perera getting sacked unfairly. The decision drew a lot of criticism but SLC has stood firm and made sure that Shanaka will be the one leading the Lankan lion versus Dhawan’s second-string Indian side although the logic behind the decision is beyond our understanding.
In other news, legendary all-rounder Angelo Mathews became the only guy not to sign Lanka’s new central contracts. 29 out of 30 listed players chose to sign-up but Mathews refused. Rumour doing rounds suggests that it is the wage cut which acted as a catalyst for Angelo’s bold decision. This aforementioned wage cut was protested against and was reportedly led by Kusal Perera which explains why he’s been sacked from a leadership role without getting much of a chance. With so many holes spawning, Lankan Cricket’s ship is all set to sink further as they gear up to face off against the mighty Indians.
