A week has passed since South Africa’s embarrassing defeat in the test series against Pat Cummins-led Australia. The performance of South Africa in the three-match away series remained extremely disappointing. Hosts Australia dominated the series in both departments, ultimately handing over a two-nill series defeat to Dean Elgar and co.
South Africans are currently engaged in the newly-introduced local T20 competition, namely, SA20. The league started last week and is set to conclude on February 11. Moreover, South Africa’s next international assignment will be a three-match One-Day International series against Jos Buttler’s England, which will be followed by a home Test series against West Indies.

Meanwhile, South Africa’s batting veteran Hashim Amla has formally announced his retirement from all forms of Cricket. The decision was made public by team Surrey, which is Amla’s team in England’s County Championship. Being a top-order batter, The South African had a notable contribution to Surrey’s title win last year (2022) as he opted to retire following a title win.
“I have great memories of the Oval ground and to finally leave it as a player fills me with immense gratitude for what has been. A sincere thank you to Alec Stewart and the entire Surrey staff, players, and Members for their support,” said Amla
“The Surrey ship runs so professionally that it would make any international player feel a sense of honor just to be involved with it. I wish them all the best and many more trophies.” Amla further added in his retirement statement
Hashim Amla, however, had already announced his retirement from International Cricket back in 2019, in a few weeks time after the World Cup. Amla chose to continue playing in England’s County Championship till now. He represented the national side in as many as 124 Tests, 181 One-Day Internationals, and 44 T20 Internationals. Playing the crucial opener’s role for Proteas, The all-format veteran had over 18,000 international runs to his name.
