Tom Latham-led second-string New Zealand team is touring Ireland for a full-fledged limited-overs leg. The tour consists of a highly-anticipated one-day series, followed by a three-match T20 series. The ODI series kicked off on July 10, whilst the T20 series is set to begin on July 18.
The Blackcaps are taking part in the tour without the likes of Kane Williamson, Devon Conway Tim Southee, and Trent Boult, who are rested after a long season of IPL and test series in England considering players’ wellbeing. Vice-captain Tom Latham led the side in the 50-overs series.
All-rounder Mitchell Santner will be dawning the captain’s hat in the upcoming 20-overs series. The team will then shift its focus to the Netherland and Scotland tour, Where a few of their marquee players including Jimmy Neeshan and Daryl Mitchell will rejoin the team.
The last over thriller:
The third game of the one-day series, which took place yesterday (July 15) turned out to be an absolute thriller. The high-scoring game was full of excitement right from the start till the end of the run chase.
The visitors posted a huge total of 360 on the board while batting first. Martin Guptill was the pick of the batters for New Zealand. The right-hander went on to score a brilliant century at a decent strike rate. Left-hand batter Henry Nicholls contributed with a knock of 79 runs at the backend of the innings.
In return, It was a remarkable effort from Ireland. Paul Sterling and Harry Tector continued their dream run with both scoring centuries while chasing a huge total. The hosts looked all set to achieve a victory. Unfortunately, They failed to score three runs off the final delivery and fell short by just 1 run in the game.
It was another heartbreak for Ireland. They had a real chance of winning all the three one-day games in the series. Luck did not go their way as they had to face a series of defeats by a comprehensive margin of 0-3.
Here’s how Twitter reacted:
Feel for Ireland. So near yet so far once again. Lost by 1 run chasing 360. Had lost 1st ODI by 1 wicket. Valiant effort but #IREvNZ
