D Briggs was the batter and Russell was fielding near fine leg. Briggs swung the bat hard and the ball went high in the sky towards the fine leg. Russell tried his best by catching it and flicking the ball back into play but unfortunately, his foot was on the boundary advertisement board which changed the result of the game as Team Abu Dhabi won by 4 wickets.
Captain Livingstone’s post-game talks
Talking about the game after the win, Abu Dhabi captain Liam Livingstone said, “That was nice to be able to get over the line after we were pretty much behind the game when batting. I think Jamie batted well together with Briggs, who did well to hit the last ball for a six to give us the win.”
He further added, “We started well and Fidel [Edwards] was brilliant with the new ball. He got some swing, which was perfect for him. Our bowling unit has been brilliant throughout the tournament so far. The boys are doing well and it has been great fun, even more so when a game goes down to the wire. We thought the last ball was a six but then we had to spend an anxious moment for the decision before we could celebrate.”
Summary of the game
Team Abu Dhabi won the toss and invited Deccan Gladiators to bat first. Deccan had a disaster of a start as they lost 3 wickets for just 3 runs on the board credit to Fidel Edwards. Hasaranga’s experience (30 off 18 balls) and Odean Smith’s power-hitting (34 off 11 balls ) made them recover Abu Dhabi and set a target of 98 runs.
While chasing, Abu Dhabi even didn’t have a great start with the bat but their captain Livingstone handled the situation in the middle. But again at halfway stage, the game was slipping out of the hands of Team Abu Dhabi as they lost 6 wickets for 51 runs.
Overton and Briggs partnership of 48 runs and the last ball six by Briggs took Team Abu Dhabi over the line. Overton was awarded Player of the Match for his contribution with both bat and ball. ( 0-4 in 1 over and 33 off 18 balls).
