Rahane form has been very poor for the last couple of years. He averages just around 24 in his last 16 test matches. His last 100 came against the Aussies at the MCG last year.
Ajinkya Rahane’s poor form this year
This year he scored 411 runs in 12 Tests at an average of 19.57. With the big dig in the form and with the performance was given by young Shreyas Iyer in the recently concluded test series against New Zealand Rahane lost his responsibility as well as the position in the Indian team in the second test match against New Zealand at Mumbai. Later it was addressed that Rahane had a niggle.
In the current South Africa tour, Rahane has been selected in the squad as a pure batter. He even got a chance to play(bat) at number 5 ahead of in-form Shreyas Iyer in the first test match at the Centurion which shows the faith in Ajinkya Rahane by the team management.
Team India got a very good start by the openers. Both Rahul and Mayank added 117 runs for the first wicket. Mayank departed after scoring 60 runs and on the very next ball Pujara got out on a golden duck. Virat was looking very comfortable in his innings but got out while poking a delivery finishing on the 8th or 9th stump.
Rahane is batting with a positive intent under a lot of pressure. At the end of day 1, Rahane is on 40 runs without playing any lose the shot. He was seen motivating himself when he came to bat.

The day-2 play called off due to rain
KL Rahul is playing the central role as he is batting on 122 runs and is well-supported by Rahane at another end. Both have added 73 runs for the 4th fourth-wicket partnership. Unfortunately, the play on day 2 is called off due to rain and the match will resume on Day-3
